In April of 2018 it was announced the American Institute of Architects EVP and chief executive officer, Robert Ivy, would be awarded the Noel Polk Lifetime Achievement Award by the Mississippi Institute of Arts and letters (MIAL). The Polk award is awarded by the MIAL to connected artist of Mississippi whose work or body of art is worthy of special recognition. Robert Ivy has been chosen for this award because of his ability to make architecture something that is accessible to all. Also, Ivy has a career as an author and a writer who writes in his own right. The Noel Polk Award Is awarded to distinguish Mississippians that also include actor Morgan Freeman Riders it Dora Welty and Shelby Foote and the late artist Walter Anderson and singer the Leontyne Price. This is an extraordinary and special honor considering this is the first time that an architect has ever received this award.
MIAL was quoted saying “When it comes to making architect more accessible to the general public, there’s really no one else from Mississippi like Robert Ivy.” Ivy is the CEO of AIA and has been since 2011, I’ve been called a “Worthy Ambassador for our profession” by the president of AIA. Since starting his journey with AIA in 2011, Ivy has expanded the global presence and influence of the organization by making architecture more accessible to the general public, and is now at its highest membership level and it’s 160-year history and more
Prior to joining the AIA in 2011, Ivy was an editor and chief for agricultural record where he would receive numerous awards for his work, which include the National Magazine Award. With Ivy leading the Architectural Record he is made this the most widely read Journal about architecture around the world it was also successful in launching the architectural record and China. In 2010 Robert Ivy was also named a “Master architect” by the Alpha Rho Chi, a national architect fraternity, which is known as an honorary title that is given to some of the world’s most well-known architects. Last year in 2017 Robert Ivy was awarded the Dean’s Medal from the University of Arkansas Fay Jones School of Agriculture.
